The Freshwater Crisis: Surrounded by Water, Yet Thirsty
Perhaps the cruelest irony: coastal communities surrounded by water face an acute freshwater shortage. Salinity has infiltrated groundwater aquifers and contaminated surface water sources. Tube wells draw brackish water. Ponds turn salty. Even drinking water becomes a daily challenge.
Women and children walk kilometers for potable water. Health impacts mount. And without freshwater, agriculture becomes even more difficult, creating a vicious cycle of scarcity.
The Shrimp Farming Illusion
Desperate for alternatives, many farmers turned to shrimp cultivation. It seemed like a solution, until climate change caught up. Rising temperatures and salinity spikes cause mass die-offs. The soil degrades further. What looked like an escape route became another trap.
We’ve documented abandoned shrimp farms, land rendered even more saline, and farmers with fewer options than before.
From Documentation to Action
Climate Chronicles isn’t just about recording problems. It’s about identifying possibilities. Through our field work, we’ve found communities rich in knowledge and ready to innovate. We’ve met women eager to lead change. We’ve seen land thought permanently damaged begin producing again with the right approach.
These stories drive our work developing nature-based solutions that turn climate challenges into opportunities for growth. Where salt and water make traditional farming impossible, we’re proving that innovation rooted in local wisdom can create new pathways forward.
Join Us in This Journey
Climate Chronicles documents the reality of climate-vulnerable communities while showcasing their resilience and innovation. Their stories deserve to be heard. Their solutions deserve to be scaled.
This is more than documentation. It’s a call to action.
Climate Chronicles is brought to you by Eco Sentinels, working at the intersection of community needs and climate innovation in coastal Bangladesh.
